The 1878 Proof Nickel Three Cent Piece (Buy on eBay) represents the second of three proof-only issues for the series. Due to declining use within circulation, the production of circulation strikes was unnecessary for a second year, although proof versions were struck for collectors.
The proof mintage for this year was 2,350 pieces, considerably higher than the proof mintage of the prior year. The increased production was likely due to the increased demand for annual Proof Sets that came with the introduction of the Morgan Silver Dollar.
Deep cameo survivors are very rare and much in demand. Average Proofs in the PR-62 to PR-64 range are usually available for a reasonable cost, while higher grade pieces are not that easy to find with attractive surfaces.
